The location must be selected as part of the electrical and fire-safety design. It should account for escape routes, ventilation, temperature, manufacturer clearances, impact risk, weather exposure, cable length and access for isolation and maintenance.
Lofts, understairs cupboards and routes needed to leave the home deserve particular scrutiny. A garage, suitable utility space, compliant external wall or detached outbuilding may be preferable, but no location is automatically acceptable for every battery.
Ask the installer to explain how the proposed position follows the battery manufacturer's instructions, PAS 63100 fire-safety guidance and the current requirements of BS 7671. Home insurers should also be told about material alterations where the policy requires it.
Choose the position before choosing the battery.
A product that cannot be installed safely and maintained properly in the available space is not the right product for the property.
